Carved from kitchilite stone, these Navajo fetishes are inspired by fetishes created by the Zuni culture. Squirrel is industrious and is admired for the ability to plan ahead. He is the protector of reserves in the harsh environment of the desert. Squirrels are not a traditional subject of Zuni fetish carving, but are representative of an animal commonly seen at Grand Canyon.
Navajo and Zuni are two of eleven tribes whose culture and history is associated with the Grand Canyon. This fetish measures 2 inches wide and stands 2 inches high.
